Many colleges, universities, and employers expect candidates to take proficiency tests to demonstrate their English language skills prior to admission or work.
There are several exams available around the world. Besides the tests that are administered by the University of Michigan, the following exams are also available to test your proficiency level in English:
FCE
This is the First Certificate in English. It is one of the Cambridge English Tests administered by the University of Cambridge.
CPE
CPE stands for "Cambridge Proficiency Exam." This is also a Cambridge English Test. It is a higher level exam than the Cambridge FCE English Test.
Cambridge ESOL
This is the Cambridge English for Speakers of Other Languages Test, also administered by Cambridge University.
IELTS
IELTS is the International English Language Testing System. The Cambridge Examination syndicate and the British Council administer this test. Many universitites in England and Australia require students to take this exam prior to applying for a course of study.
TOEFL
TOEFL is the Test of English as a Foreign Language. Educational Testing Service (ETS) administers this test. Most universitites in the United States have students take this exam prior to admission.
TOEIC
TOEIC stands for Test of English for International Communication. It is also a trademark of Educational Testing Service (ETS).
